Yunnan Machinery Imp. & Exp. Corporation was set up in December 1981 as a branch of China National Machinery Imp. & Exp. Corporation. It was approximately in late 1987 that YMC separated from the Group and began its independent management.

To win the tug-of-war in the international market, YMC always maintain the guiding ideology of export as base, economic benefit as focus, management as keystone and reform as impetus. Its business has expended to more than 20 countries and regions since 1987. Overseas companies have been distributed in Myanmar, Hong Kong, Malaysia, U.S.A., Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. For 13 years since 1987, the import and export volumes added up to 713 million us dollars, among which, the export was 566 million US Dollars and the import 147 million US Dollars; the profit payments and tax turnover added up to 40.6 million RMB Yuan, among which, income tax was 10.04 million RMB Yuan. The total import and export volumes surmounted 100 million US Dollars successively in 1995 and 1996. YMC has ranked for successive years as an advanced foreign trade company: as one of the 20 Best Foreign Trade Enterprises of Yunnan Province from 1989 to 1992; as one of the 5 Biggest Exporters of Yunnan Province from 1990 to 1995; as one of China's 500 Foreign Trade Enterprises with the Most Outstanding Import & Export Business Performance for five consecutive years from 1992 to 1996.
